Music Match K-Pop Edition: a K-pop card game for every generation

Music Match now has a K-Pop edition. It came out on 4 September 2026, it is made by Source 1 Media in Leeuwarden like the original, and QRSong! is again the technical partner behind the scanning and playback. The rules have the same shape as the original game. The part worth writing about is what they changed to make it work for K-pop, because it says a lot about how fans actually think about the music.
What changed from the original
The original edition matches a song on Artist, Title, Decade, Country, Vocals, Genre and whether it was a number one hit. For K-pop, five of those were replaced. The seven categories in the K-Pop edition are:
- Artist
- Title
- Artist Type
- Members
- Generation
- Agency
- Release Year
That swap makes sense once you try the original categories on K-pop. Country is the same answer for almost every song. Genre does not split a deck the way it does for a mixed playlist. Decade is too coarse for a genre where a fan can tell 2016 from 2019 by the production.
Fans do not sort K-pop by decade anyway. They sort it by generation and by the company behind a group, and the new categories follow that.
The seven categories
Every QR card has an answer side that lists all seven. One of the official product photos shows a card for TWICE's "FANCY": girl group, 9 members, 3rd generation, JYP Entertainment, 2019. That is the whole answer key for one song, and any of those lines can be your match.
Artist and Title work as in the original, with one twist covered below: only one player per round can claim each of them.
Artist Type is the easy one, and that is the point. Girl group or boy group, for example. Somebody who barely knows the song can often still get this one right.
Members asks how many are in the group. This is the category most likely to start an argument, because line-ups change. The printed answer is what counts at the table, so settle that before the first round rather than after.
Generation runs from the first-generation pioneers to today's fifth-generation groups. Fans argue about where one generation ends and the next begins, which is exactly why it makes a good category. The card settles it.
Agency is the label or company behind the act: SM, YG, JYP, HYBE and the rest. Long-time fans tend to know this better than they expect to.
Release Year is for the people who remember which comeback was which summer.
How a round plays
Everybody starts with 7 Match Cards. One player holds the DJ Token and scans the top QR card with the Music Match app, and the song starts.
From that moment everybody plays at once. You pick a card from your hand that you think matches the song, put it down, and grab a Claim Cube. There is always one cube fewer than there are players, so somebody is always last.
Most cards are played face down, so nobody can copy you. Artist and Title are the exception. You play those face up and announce the category, not the answer, and once somebody has claimed Artist, nobody else can play an Artist card that round. The same goes for Title. Every card has a small padlock icon that tells you which way up it goes.
Then you turn over the QR card and check the matches:
- The player without a Claim Cube draws 2 cards if their match is wrong.
- Everybody else with a wrong match draws 1.
- A correct match costs nothing.
The DJ Token then passes to whoever has the fewest cards, and they scan the next song. Play your last card with a correct match and you win. If two people do that at the same time, you can share the win or play a match-off on Artist, Title or Release Year.
The full rules, including the Action Cards, are on the official rules page.
Who it is for
It is a game for K-pop fans, and it does not pretend otherwise. A table where nobody follows K-pop will not get much out of it.
Where it works well is a group of fans who know different eras. Someone who got into K-pop recently knows the fourth and fifth generations inside out. Someone who has been a fan for fifteen years knows the second generation by heart. In a pure name-the-song quiz, one of them wins every round from their own era. Here, Artist Type, Generation and Agency give everybody something to play in every round. That is also how Source 1 Media describes it: fans of every generation on equal ground.
Because everybody plays at the same time, nobody sits waiting for a turn. That keeps it moving with a bigger group, and retailer listings put it at 3 to 7 players.
What you need
- The free Music Match app, on iOS and Android. This edition uses its own app, not the QRSong! app.
- A streaming app. The rules list Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music, YouTube Music and Tidal.
- A speaker, or at least a phone loud enough for the whole table.
The cards are in English.
Price and where to buy it
At the time of writing it costs about €25. The official buy page lists the shops by country:
- Netherlands and Belgium: bol.com, MediaMarkt, Amazon.nl, K-Pop Webshop, HeyHallyu, Standaard Boekhandel, iMusic and Entertainment Planet.
- Across Europe: HeyHallyu and Bak Bak.
- Elsewhere: iMusic ships to Denmark and the United Kingdom, DAE Store to France, and Nekonečno to Slovakia.
As a gift for a K-pop fan, it has one thing going for it that another album version does not: it gets played with other people.
If your favourite group is not in it
Music Match is a published game with a fixed tracklist. If the group you care about most is missing, or you want a deck that is nothing but one group's discography, that is what QRSong! does.
Paste a playlist and you get cards built from exactly those songs, with the release years checked. The cards play the timeline game on their own. Music bingo and a music quiz come with the QRGames add-on. The four ways to play one deck are written up separately.
For the original Dutch edition and more on the game itself, see the Music Match page.
Questions people ask about this
What is Music Match K-Pop Edition?
A music card game in which you scan a QR card, listen to the song and play a card from your hand that matches it. You can match on Artist, Title, Artist Type, Members, Generation, Agency or Release Year. The first player to get rid of all their cards wins. It is made by Source 1 Media, with QRSong! as the technical partner.
How is it different from the original Music Match?
The rules have the same shape, but the categories are built for K-pop. Decade, Country, Vocals, Genre and number one hit were replaced by Artist Type, Members, Generation, Agency and Release Year. The K-Pop edition is also in English, where the original is in Dutch.
Which generations of K-pop are in it?
All of them, from the first-generation pioneers to fifth-generation groups, according to the publisher. Generation is also one of the seven categories you can match on.
Which app and streaming services do I need?
The free Music Match app for iOS or Android, plus Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music, YouTube Music or Tidal.
How many players is it for?
Retailer listings say 3 to 7. Everybody plays at the same time, so a bigger group does not slow it down.
Can I add my own K-pop songs?
No, the tracklist is fixed. If you want cards for your own K-pop playlist, QRSong! makes a deck from any playlist you paste in.
